Pioneers in the Field
SIKAT pioneered the Review for College Entrance Tests in Zamboanga City. What started in 2009 as a small class of six (6) for the UPCAT (University of the Philippines College Admission Test) Review rose to almost a hundred students in just three years. The program became more popular when SIKAT introduced an all-in-one College Entrance Test Review not just for UP but also for the rest of the so-called “Big 4” that includes Ateneo de Manila University , De La Salle University, and the University of Santo Tomas.
To engage and boost the confidence of all high school students in Zamboanga City and nearby provinces taking the College Entrance Exams, the SIKAT team has been holding an annual 2-day event called “UPgrade” since 2011. This was also a first in Zamboanga. Here, the students learn test-taking tips from the experts, manage pre- and exam day stress, and take a mock UPCAT for a heads up on what to expect in the actual exam.
Together, the College Entrance Review Program and UPgrade have been successful in increasing students’ chances of being admitted to the country’s top schools and universities. Among our successful roster of examinees are a UP Oblation scholar, three (3) topnotchers in the UST Entrance Exams, at least three (3) De La Salle University Academic Scholars, and several topnotchers from the Western Mindanao State University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, and Mindanao State University Entrance Exams.
In light of the K-12 Roadmap and 2015 ASEAN Economic Community, the University Admission process is inevitably going to change for college entrants in 2018, the first batch in the country to have finished a 12-year Basic Education Program. For the UPCAT, there have already been talks of a reinvented admission such as two-stage UPCAT and a Senior High Track test and a program-specific exam on top of the UPCAT. Other universities such as Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle, and Santo Tomas have also publicly announced that there will be a revamp of their College Entrance Exams to reflect the additional learning competencies in Years 11 and 12.
What do these mean for the Review Center industry that includes SIKAT? It invariably means more challenge but one that will propel us to greater heights once surmounted! We shall be called pioneers twice over, and this time as provider of an unprecedented college entrance test review program for the first K-12 graduates of the country.
SIKAT has been consulting with some of its Years 11 and 12 DepEd lecturers to anticipate possible college entrance exam content in terms of cognitive measurement tested, whether aptitude or achievement-based. This ensures that our new College Entrance Test Review Program beginning Summer of 2017 will not be hit and miss but rather one that reflects the important changes to the new admission system of the country’s colleges and universities.
